Advice for parents
Parents are indeed their children’s primary companion, specifically in their earliest years. Along with learning how to walk and talk, they also absorb the mannerisms, social habits , values and often parts of the personality of one or both parents. More importantly, the foundational knowledge of their religion is acquired through how it is practiced at home.
Radiant Hearts Adult program has been structured specifically to aid parents bring the ethical and moral teachings of our religion into our daily lives. Each lesson starts with an Essential Question and ends by explaining one Virtue of the Week, which can be practiced by the whole family together. If your children see you praying regularly, eating in a healthy way, reading, and donating to charity, there is a high likelihood your children will begin to join you in prayer, make good food choices, enjoy reading, and be compassionate as well.
The Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه و سلّم spoke about the importance of companions and how we take on their likeness. He صلى الله عليه و سلّم said if you spend time in the company of a blacksmith your clothes may be burnt. However, if you spend time in the company of a perfume seller, you may purchase something from him or he may gift you with something, you may benefit from his pleasant smell.
It is up to the Parents whether their children acquire a perfumed nature or the opposite. A good gauge is to see how your children speak to their younger siblings or even a pet, their kindness or harshness is often a reflection of how they in turn have been spoken to at home.
An excellent example of self-development and improvement was Imam al-Ghazali. He went to great lengths to change himself and impacted not only his generation, but generations to come. While improving ourselves may not have the same massive effect as Imam al-Ghazali, it will impact our children and the people we interact with. For example, even a small action, like counting to three before responding, to help ourselves not shout or scold, will make the world a kinder place for them. InshaAllah, our children will then take these etiquettes into the world and be like perfume sellers to others.
Only Allah The Merciful knows the full extent of our earnest supplications, and of how changing just one of our habits will echo through our own and future generations. It is for us to know that Allah عزّ و جلّ has given us the potential to profoundly change others by changing ourselves and to act on that by following the best example given in the values and characteristics of our beloved Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلّم, starting at home with our families.
